Jacobo Mendoza and his family have been making tapetes (rugs) in Teotitlán del Valle, outside Oaxaca City, for generations. His son Jacobito, though only eleven, is already weaving in traditional Zapotec style.
Jacobo and his wife, María Luisa operate a handmade rug gallery and weaving workshop on the principal street on the way into Teotitlán del Valle. You will see many galleries and workshops in Teotitlán but few offer the exquisite detail that you will find here.
Jacobo's skill is recognized in the Oaxaca area and his work was selected for the prestigious exhibition at the cultural arts show in March 2008. Jacobo's work was purchased by Museo Textil de Oaxaca and is to be included in their permanent collection. It was also shown in a travelling exhibition in the United States in 2009.
The family is very excited about the new gallery they have just moved to from their former location in the center of Teotilán.

Jacobo's rugs are shown at a gallery in California and may also be purchased directly from him. He visits California in late November or early December each year.
